About this course

Like boats and hands on work?.

Mechanical/Marine Fitters use a range of tools and engineering techniques to maintain and repair mechanical plant machinery and equipment to operational standards. Work includes the identification of defective or worn mechanical components or equipment, repair/replacement of worn/faulty components or equipment, and modifications. In a shipyard or defence industry they install and test a ship's major machinery and other mechanical components. They learn the safe operation of shop machines and hand and power tools to install and test systems that may include engines, generators, pumps, propellers, rudders, periscopes and armaments. First Class or CNC Machinists are responsible for the operation, programming and maintenance of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery.

Gain these skills:
  • carry out mechanical cutting
  • perform manual heating and thermal cutting
  • apply safe welding practices
  • perform general machining
  • interpret technical drawing
  • install pipework and pipework assemblies
  • undertake manual handling
  • use power tools/hand held operations
  • repair and fit engineering components
