(1) To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have-
(1) an accredited bachelor's honours degree in psychology with at least an upper second class Honours (2A), or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by the Psychology Board of Australia or the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council. The Honours degree in psychology must be completed within the past 10 years at the time of application or you must be provisionally or generally registered as a psychology with AHPRA at the time of application; and
(2) Applicants must be eligible for provisional registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia. and
(3) Applicants must have secured PhD supervision, with at least one supervisor from the School of Psychological Science at the time of submitting their application.

Preparing your application

Applicants need to:

have obtained an APAC-accredited honours degree (or equivalent) in Psychology, with a mark of IIA or higher, and
find a PhD supervisor who is an academic staff member of the School of Psychological Science who agrees to supervise you if you are offered a place in program, and agree on a basic outline of the research project you will undertake. You must have this supervisory agreement and outline of your PhD worked out prior to applying to the program. Start looking for a supervisor at least two to three months before the application is due.

The UWA Master of Clinical Psychology and Master of Clinical Neuropsychology meet Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accreditation requirements and provide graduates with the necessary qualification to apply for registration as a psychologist in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Key psychology practice skills are embedded and assessed throughout these programs.

Domains

The Master of Clinical Psychology and Master of Clinical Neuropsychology courses are professional courses. They leads to registration as a psychologist in Australia. As such, all students who enter the program must have fundamental skills needed to practice that are assessed throughout the course to meet required competencies.

Students are required to undertake placements in Australian healthcare contexts throughout the course, which means that they will work with people from diverse backgrounds (e.g., all genders, different faith backgrounds).

Communication Domain

Description

Students require strong communication skills, such as understanding and responding to nonverbal and verbal communication accurately, appropriately, and in a timely manner. This includes a solid command of English, both oral and written. They also need to be able to communicate respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, such as gender, culture, religion, and sexual orientation.

Justification

Understanding and demonstrating accurate, timely, coherent, and respectful communication (nonverbal, verbal, oral and written) is also fundamental to safe practice in the discipline. Communication skills are needed to:

Coordinate care
Complete clinical tasks in a time-sensitive way, such as writing reports and progress notes, writing letters to and conferring with clients and relevant others (e.g., organisations, practitioners)
Forming a therapeutic relationship with clients
Conversing with supervisors, staff and peers/colleagues

Communication skills are required to liaise with others inside and outside the organisation. There will be a requirement for presentations to small and large groups of allied health staff and community stakeholders. Communication skills are also needed to participate in tutorial, simulation, clinical and placement discussions.

Adjustments

- For verbal communication, adjustments must address the need for timeliness, accuracy, coherence, and clarity across various formats (e.g., individual presentations, group presentations).

- For nonverbal communication, adjustments must facilitate the student recognising, interpreting, and responding to non-verbal cues appropriately, as well as showing and interpreting one's own nonverbal behaviour (e.g., facial expressions, posture, body language, and attire) and understanding how others might interpret this.

- For written communication, adjustments must address impairments in order to meet the need for writing with clarity, cogency, coherence, and accuracy, as well as the need for timely completion.

Description

The capacity to show ethical and legal practice and conduct are integral to the program and the discipline. Students will need to be aware of their obligations as a provisional psychologist and should show knowledge of:

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) Code of Ethics, the APS Ethical Practice Guidelines, and the APS Code of Conduct
The key Australian legislation governing the organisation of the profession [e.g., Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2010 (WA) & Mental Health Act (2014)]
The broader legislation, practice standards, policies, and professional guidelines with which provisional and endorsed psychologists must interact

Justification

Ethical conduct in accordance with our codes, guidelines, and policies enables safe and competent practice. Complying with these codes, guidelines and policies ensure that the wellbeing of clients are not placed at risk. Students must be able to understand and conduct themselves in keeping with a range of codes, guidelines, policies, and regulatory requirements, etc., that govern their practice.

Adjustments

Adjustments must ensure that the student will meet provisions of the relevant codes, guidelines, and legislation in an ongoing manner.

Emotional and Behavioural regulation

Description

The regulation of emotions and behaviours is needed to function effectively and competently in the course. Whilst students are supported as they learn the competencies of the course, these courses are demanding. Consequently, emotional and behavioural stability is needed to work constructively. This includes maintaining objectivity and professionalism across diverse environments and contexts that can be challenging and unpredictable. Students are thus required to "function and adapt effectively and sensitively in a demanding role" (Brett et al., 2016, p. 31), within the context of their course.

Justification

Students will be exposed to "highly complex human situations and will be required to have behavioural stability to manage these events competently and professionally" (Brett et al., 2016, p. 31). Students must manage the often taxing demands and workload inherent in either of these programs as this ability helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of those with whom they interact, such as clients, peers, supervisors, and professional colleagues. They need to be receptive to reflective of constructive criticism, and respond appropriately to constructive feedback.

Adjustments

Adjustments for emotional and behavioural regulation must address the student's need to develop/redevelop and maintain emotional and behavioural regulation skills.

Description

Cognitive skills must be demonstrated to undertake these courses---which integrate science and practice---and to engage in safe and competent practice in the discipline. The capacity to demonstrate a range of scientific and clinical skills is also essential to maintaining effective client care in clinical psychology or neuropsychology placements.

Cognitive - Scientific skills

Students must show the cognitive skills needed to function as a trainee in these courses, which includes showing the ability to find and digest scientific literature to inform clinical psychology/neuropsychology practice; numeracy skills that show the ability to collect, interpret, and inform clinical psychology/neuropsychology practice; and reasoning and analytical skills that show the ability to make logical inferences based on evidence to inform practice.

Students must also show the cognitive skills needed to work as a scientist-practitioner, and thus demonstrate the capacity to be a producer and a consumer of new clinical knowledge. In addition to the preceding skills, cognitive skills involve the capacity to evaluate the current state of knowledge in an area and to frame a question scientifically and a means of answering it. Additionally, adequate comprehension of abstract concepts and critical thinking skills are essential for safe and effective care.

Applications for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Autism Diagnosis in 2025 open on 1 August 2024 and close on 31 October 2024.

Important course and unit information

The Graduate Certificate in Autism Diagnosis comprises 24 credit points, including the units PSYC5520, PSYC5521, PYSC5522 and PSYC5523.
Successful applicants who gain a place in the Graduate Certificate in Autism Diagnosis will be required to complete the seven micro-credential courses that comprise the first two coursework units (PSYC5520 and PSYC5521).
The units PSYC5520 and PSYC5521 are not available to be studied in the course and will be credited upon successful completion of the micro-credential courses PSYCM510, PSYCM511, PSYCM512, PSYCM513, PSYCM514, PSYCM515, and PSYCM516.
All students undertaking this course must complete these micro-credential courses in order to be awarded credit for PSYC5520 and PSYC5521 and complete the course.
Please note: Micro-credential courses require upfront payment of tuition and are not available via a FEE-HELP loan.

Course commencement information

The seven autism diagnosis micro-credential courses will be available for enrolment in late 2024 and early 2025, allowing sufficient time for their completion prior to commencement of PSYC5522 and PSYC5523.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many students do you accept into the GCAD per year?

Usually about 15-25 each year/in each cohort, sometimes a few more and sometimes a few less depending on how many applicants meet the admission requirements, and teacher-student ratio in the applied/practical units PSYC5522 and PSYC5523.

Do I have to have previous clinical experience assessing or supporting autistic individuals to be offered a place in the GCAD?

Previous or current clinical experience assessing and/or supporting autistic children, young people or adults is not essential (relevant clinical experience with children, adolescents or adults is required), but it is always helpful and is therefore desirable. Please ensure to outline any autism relevant experience in your CV and/or personal statement. We have accepted applicants who have limited experience working with autistic individuals but who are currently in roles where they can apply their GCAD training.

Do I need to live in or travel to Perth to study the GCAD?

The course is now delivered fully online, therefore we accept students from all over Australia. We also accept applicants from New Zealand. You do not need to live or travel to Perth to complete the course.

We are currently not able to accept international applicants outside of Australia and New Zealand for our 2025 GCAD intake. However, professionals outside of Australia and New Zealand who are interested in further developing their knowledge in autism diagnosis can enrol and complete one or more of the autism diagnosis microcredential courses available for enrolment via UWA Plus.

How long will it take me to complete the GCAD?

The GCAD is completed part-time. This means you can study the GCAD part-time while working. You can choose to complete the GCAD part-time in one or in two calendar years.

What is the GCAD's approach to understanding, diagnosing and supporting autistic people?

The GCAD is informed by Australian and other international guidelines for the assessment and diagnosis of autism. We adopt a lifespan approach and consider identification and diagnosis to be an important step towards understanding, accepting, and supporting autistic people. The program staff view autism as a difference and adopt neuroaffirming and respectful language and perspectives. The autism diagnosis microcredential courses and GCAD units draw from evidence from co-produced research with autistic people and the lived experiences of autistic people. We explore social issues and barriers relating to diagnosis. We also explore and reflect on autistic people's experiences of the diagnostic process and the ways in which a respectful and collaborative diagnostic process can be implemented.

(ii) demonstrate competency for legal studies derived from a minimum of five years' unpaid or paid work, study or other experience, since completion of the undergraduate degree in (i); and
(iii) completed the equivalent of one year full time in a UWA undergraduate course with a minimum GPA of 5.5 undertaken within the past two years;
or
(b)
(i) a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by UWA; and
(ii) the equivalent of a UWA grade point average (GPA) of at least 5.0; and
(iii) demonstrate competency for legal studies derived from a minimum of five years' unpaid or paid work, study or other experience since completion of the undergraduate degree in (i); and
(iv) personal statement; and
(v) interview.
To be considered for transfer to this course an applicant must-
(a) have been enrolled in a recognised Juris Doctor course at another Australian University; and
(b) have successfully completed at least one full semester (or equivalent part time study) in that Juris Doctor;
and
(c) have achieved the equivalent of a UWA weighted average mark (WAM) of at least 60 per cent in that Juris Doctor course.
*All completed tertiary studies will be used when calculating the WAM and GPA.

Your selection GPA for JD admission will be calculated on a maximum 7-point scale and is rounded to two decimal places. Where appropriate, your grades will be converted to this scale using approved guidelines.

If you have completed more than one degree qualification, your selection GPA will include all completed qualifications. Each qualification is weighted by standard full-time degree duration, as part of a combined selection GPA.

Calculation of your selection GPA includes:

unit grades from all completed* University-level degrees, including fails

unit grades for any advanced standing that contributes toward your completed qualifications**

unit grades for non-exchange cross-institutional study

Calculation of your selection GPA does not include:

units studied as part of an incomplete degree, except where some or all units contribute advanced standing toward a completed degree

unit advanced standing based on vocational-level study (e.g. TAFE or vocational diploma)

ungraded passes (note that ungraded fails are included and counted as zero)

unit grades for formal overseas student exchange studies

*completed courses includes qualifications due to be complete prior to 31 December the year before admission. Applicants with incomplete qualifications may be issued a conditional offer subject to achieving the required selection GPA.
** a unit grade can only be used once within the selection GPA calculation and cannot be double-counted. This means that advanced standing is normally only included when advanced standing is based on units that are undertaken as part of incomplete degree studies.

Selection GPA vs Course Transcript GPA

Your selection GPA may differ from your course transcript GPA due to advanced standing or if you hold more than one completed degree or degrees from different institutions.

Concession Scheme - Removal of four lowest grades

If your selection GPA is below the requirement of 5.50, your selection GPA will be recalculated by removing the four lowest grades. The minimum level of study to be used to calculate your selection GPA is 12 units (1.5 FTE).

Your selection GPA will not be recalculated if your selection GPA is above the requirement for the applicable admission pathway.

Removal of the four lowest grades from the selection GPA will not alter fee category eligibility. Rankings for commonwealth-supported places will be based on the full selection GPA with all results included.

Please note the Concession scheme will not be applied for the Alternative Experience pathway if the selection GPA is below 5.0.

Weighting of degrees Your combined selection GPA is weighted according to the standard full-time duration of your completed degrees. Unit credit points are standardised across institutions based on equivalent full-time study load (EFTSL) completed in-degree. For example, if an applicant has completed:

UWA Bachelor's degree (3-year EFTSL, 144 credit points), with a course GPA of 5.50

UWA Graduate Diploma (1-year EFTSL, 48 credit points), with a course GPA of 6.00

Their GPA will be calculated as follows: 5.50 x 3 years EFTSL = 16.5
6.00 x 1 year EFTSL = 6
(weighted GPA 16.5 + 6 = 22.5) / (total EFTSL 3 + 1 = 4) = 5.625.

The combined selection GPA would be 5.63 (rounded to two decimal places).

Ph.D. or Master by Research degree calculation Applicants who hold a completed Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) are automatically awarded a selection GPA of 7.00.
Applicants who hold a Master by Research will have a bonus of 0.20 applied to the GPA calculation, however, the course itself will not be included in the GPA calculation.

Ranking and Selection Process

Where relevant, admission will be awarded to the highest ranked applicants or applicants selected based on-
(a) for indigenous applicants under Rule 4(2) (b), or (c):
(i) the admission requirements under Rule 4(2) (b), or (c);
and
(ii) the indigenous student quota of up to 20 per year;
(b) for applicants in the Equity and Diversity Pathway:
(i) the admission requirements under 4.(3) (a), (b) and (c); and
(ii) the Equity and Diversity Pathway quota of 20 per year;
or
(c) for applicants who do not have a place in a Direct Pathway into this course and are not transferring from another Juris Doctor course:
(i) the admission requirements under Rule 4(1); and
(ii) the intake quota for that year.

English is the language of instruction and assessment at UWA and you will need to meet the English language requirements of the University to be eligible for a place.
