This course is not an introductory course to the study of aquaculture. We recommend starting aquaculture study in the Certificate II in Aquaculture or having some experience in the aquaculture industry before applying for entry into this qualification.

This course is also available as a traineeship.

Entrance requirements for traineeships

You must be employed in a training contract by an appropriate organisation to study an apprenticeship or traineeship.

In a traineeship you also gain hands-on skills and work experience, and improve your employment prospects, while earning a wage. On successful completion you will gain a nationally recognised qualification which can lead to rewarding career options. The difference between a traineeship and an apprenticeship is that a traineeship can be either a full time or part time employment based training arrangement, usually for a nominal duration of 12 months or more, generally in a non-trade related area.

Prospective students should hold one of the following:

  • A Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 35 metres Near Coastal) or
  • A Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Integrated Rating) with TAGS books and sea time or
  • An AMSA approved equivalent trade certificate.

In addition to successful completion of the Diploma of Maritime Operations (Master up to 500GT), the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requires students to successfully complete each of the following to be issued with a new certificate of competency:

  • Meet medical test and eyesight requirements
  • Hold of the following: unrestricted Master less than 24 meter Near coastal Certificate of competency, watchkeeper deck less than 500 GT or unrestricted Master less than 35 meters near coastal.
  • Completed qualifying sea service time as an officer in charge on a navigation watch. Please refer to AMSA website below for further information
  • Pass an Orals Examination

Students that have already completed MAR50120 Diploma of Marine Engineering (Engineer Class 3 Near Coastal) are eligible to apply for a credit transfer to reduce the study load and overall course cost.
